Jean Cencig

Born in 1953, I have been etching since 1977. I completed my classical studies with a collegial diploma in Literature and Communications, followed by eclectic studies at Université Laval. My interest in etching grew from contact with the artists of Quebec City’s Rue du Trésor, while the works of the old masters have influenced my self-taught etching technique.

I am inspired by Quebec’s landscapes and cityscapes, but I also etch atypical subjects, sometimes inspired by my interest in mathematics. My copper plates are etched by hand, using traditional etching tools such as point and aquatint, but I sometimes engrave with burins or use mezzotint. I practice an uncommon technique of etching known as multi-plate register polychrome etching. I print my intaglios “à la poupée” in my studio in Quebec City.

One of the founding members of the Association des Artistes de la Rue du Trésor, AART, I am also a member of RAAV, as well as a former grantee of the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation.

My etchings are found in many private and public collections, in Canada and abroad. Thank you for your appreciation of my work, which enables me to pursue my experiments in visual arts.
